New member with hybrid build
« on: Jan 26, 2017, 09:12:38 AM »
Good day! I'm building a bit of a b*std of a vintage Land Rover with Toyota driveline..in Norway. I had originally used the entire eng/Trans 5spd/transfer case and straight axles from my 1985 Hilux with the 2.4l non-turbo after the truck rusted away from the perfect mechanicals..That is already installed in the frame, mounts made, rear driveshaft made...then off course I got wise and bought a 1994 4-runner with rust issues that has the 3.0l 1kzt turbo deisel motor and R150F 5 spd. It as well has the 4 pinion limited slip diff in 4.10 ratio which are stronger than the hilux and also a bit wider. I'll use the IFS hub from the 4Runner on my hilux front axle and vented discs to gain the width to match the rear.....so my long winded question is, should I get the adapter shaft to use the R150F Trans but with the older gear driven transfer case from the Hilux? I want it to be as bulletproof as possible. I'll be tuning the 1KZT a bit and have both a water/meth inj kit as well as propane options. Big exhaust and big intercooler are already in placed .

Options or opinions????
Thanks, Hans

:welcome: always a bit envious of the diesel motors and  cool vehicles we never got in the states.

Most folks use the gear driven case (rf1a) due to the strength and huge aftermarket support.

There is a few cool things about the chain driven case (vf1a)
Like the ability to shift on the fly into 4wd up to 50 mph (80kph) and it has a 23 spline input shaft and a 30 spline output shaft, they are plenty strong they just don't get a lot of attention.

Some folks use both in a doubler set up.

Post pics please!

Yeah, I grew up in Texas and moved to Norway about ten years ago. Vintage Landy's just aren't around...they were used in the military over here up to the 80s then all sold off. Most Norwegians think I'm stupid for not just building a Toyota...;) I can't wait to tune on this Bosch VE pump, just a smaller version of the one in my old 12v Cummins I had back in Texas. This motor is one of the last years with the completely mechanical pump...no electronics! I have propane and water/meth kit for it.

Welcome, with the stock torque of the diesel being within that of the 3.4, and the same w/oem upgrades, along with people running dual chain cases(133.81:1 crawl ratio) w/o the chain breaking, you should be fine with your planned upgrades, besides it isn't like you will be dropping the clutch at max trq in 1st gear/low 4wd, or should be w/o expecting something to break.
