Should I make the switch?
« on: May 18, 2016, 03:47:19 PM »
Currently I am running 4:88's and an ARB locker in the front axle and 4:88's in the rear for pushing 35's with a 3.0 auto. I need to buy a rear locker which I am sure I will purchase an ARB. Also I eventually want to do a 3.4 swap and I probably won't run tires any larger then 37's. I am currently going to run the auto with dual gear driven cases and the 35's. Should I buy the ARB rear locker with 5:29's and switch out the front ARB with 4:88's to 5:29's or stay with 4:88's.

I have heard people stick with 4:88's since they are stronger then the  5:29's but I don't have any personal  knowledge of that. Also I have built my dual cases with Marlin 4.7 comp gears, chromoly 30 spline output, chromoly main shaft and 23 total spine inputs.

Tell me your thoughts, thanks.

You don't need the 5.29s for offroad with dual cases.......

4.88 vs. 5.29 is a decision based solely on street driving. I would go 4.88 and just change both when and if you go 37s AND you determine you want better performance. I think you should be fine with the 3.4 and 37s. I do ok with my 35s with 4.88 and a stock 22RE.

I would strongly consider a Detroit for the rear. The never fail and I really don't consider than I have any driveability issues that can't easily be handled. I've run a mechanical rear locker since about 2001 and it really isn't a big deal.

3.4 and 4.88 will push 37s very well. My 3RZ with 5.29 pushes 37s very well and it has about as much difference in horsepower as the difference in gearing makes if that makes sense.
