What truck should I build to wheel?
« on: May 16, 2016, 03:10:43 AM »
This is my first post so I hope I am able to figure it out.

I reside in close proximity to walker valley and reiter pit and for years have been into dirt bikes and Toyotas. I wanted to get into wheeling again and found a deal on an 86 Toyota pickup. Shortly after I purchased the 86' my buddy decided to sell me his 92' Toyota. Both trucks need some work. The 86' Is a standard cab which has the following:22re , 5 sped, Flat bed, high steer, 4:88 front and rear, with sliders and 35's. In addition the 92' is a sas ex-cab which has the following:3.0 , auto, 4:88 front and rear , high steer ,and 35's. The 92' sas was an all pro kit and the 86 ' was done without a kit but done properly. The 3.0 will be replaced with a 3.4 after it blows and I also have a parts to swap the auto in the 92' to a 5spd. I was originally going to build the 92' since I want the leg room but I am not sure. Before I finish building my dual cases I need to figure out what truck to build. Also if it makes a difference I all ready have the Inchworm adapter for the v6 auto to dual gear driven cases. I was then thinking about building the 86 for strictly off road and the 92 as a built daily driver but that's two expensive to build two trucks and I already have a tundra for a daily driver. If I can figure out how to post pictures of the trucks I will.

Thanks for the input.

Build both..... it's like a potato chip, you can't just have 1.... honestly, reading what you wrote, the 92 sounded worse, but once you said 3.4l, that went out the window... I have a family, so I would build a 4runner if I had the chance

First off welcome to the board.  :welcome: When you get a truck built up you'll have to tag along for a trip to run Reiter or Walker. In my opinion ex cabs have the best wheel base and are the best starting platform to build off of. Take it from a guy who has put easily 15k into a 4Runner that wishes he had built ex cab instead.

Sell the '86 and build the '92, you can never have too much storage space for gear.

If you trailer it, the auto wont be much of a concern, but if you drive to the trails, I would swap the 5-spd when you do the dual case install.  The current gearing of the '92 w/auto is for 31" tires, the 5-spd will put you one gear set off from stock ratio(should be 5.29's for 35's), and will give you much better fuel economy.
'90 black X-cab mod'd 3.0, 33's/4.88's, rear ARB, custom bumpers, sliders, safari rack, etc.
'91 Blue X-cab 22re, 35's/5.29's,Truetrac front, ARB rear, dual cases, and custom Safari flatbed, bumper, interior.

I agree with SqWAdoosh.  The 4Runner is a lot more versatile and I really have not been anywhere outside of Moab where I felt like it made a significant difference, but in Moab the difference in wheelbase, weight distribution, and the ability to easily "bob" them between a 4Runner and an extended cab (or long bed) truck is clear.  You saw CrankyCrawlers truck go a few places pretty easily that the 4Runners struggled with.  I used to be that cool with my 85 so know first hand the difference in performance.

If wheeling is the only concern, build a 2nd Gen extended cab and cut about 12 inches off the back for the best performance.
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

Moab Tested & Rubicon Approved
