Toyota won't start. Clicking from transmission?
« on: Apr 03, 2016, 07:18:46 PM »
So I was going up mountain loop highway in Washington today in my 79 pickup and I started to here a clicking noise while my truck was in gear and I was accelerating but I just ignored it since my truck makes a bunch of weird noises anyways. But when my friend and I got to the top of a trial we found, my truck just died and I got a weird buzzing noise that I'd never heard before. The engine ran fine before, and it goes into gear just fine, it just won't fire. It was running fine the whole time going up there. Does anyone know what might be wrong? Should I just wait it out and see if it will start back up? The engine and transmission are out of an 81 pickup (22r and 5-speed).

Is the starter engaging? If it is could be an issue with the flywheel?

Yes the starter is engaging. I noticed that if I try to start the engine and hold the key at the start position while in 1st and letting off the clutch (if that makes any sense), the truck will move a little bit. I don't know if that makes a difference in the diagnosis of my problem.

Hard to make a guess as to what the problem could be from the symptoms you have described. i would say start with the basics. Make sure you are getting fuel at the carb. Then check that you are getting spark at the plugs. (Keep a fire extinguisher close by). If you have access to a compression tester do a compression test.
