The ecu needs to receive a signal from the KS above about 2k rpms, w/o receiving the signal, the ecu will go into "safe mode" to prevent engine damage.  This safe mode will reduce performance and likely drop fuel economy as well.  Is there a spot cast in the block for the KS, that you can drill and tap?
