No, the real fix was to add some mirrors that might survive another close encounter of the granite kind as follows.  



1)   First, some 1/2" steel tubing

2)  then some   to a 3/8" bolt, insert bolt into another piece of said tubing. Drill hole for a roll pin in the bolt just below the
     head. Position bolt and mark tubing for notches to be made for a detent.

3)  assemble bolt to lower tubing (after welding on a mounting flange) and install spring with a nylock nut to adjust tension and viola!
     Swing away mirror mounts with a return detented position!
