It seems like most people have gone away from the 1/4 setup. Not really sure why. I've never really wheeled with anyone that's had it. It seem like most people have either gone to linked suspension with either coils, or coil overs, or good quality leaf springs.
The biggest differance I see is that back when lots of guys were expiermenting with 1/4 etc, there were really no good aftermarket leaf spring options. Now there are many companies, like Malrin, that build a leaf spring that is designed for rock crawlers, instead of pavement pounders and Baja jumpers. Others started looking at the off road racers and found giant coil overs. They work awesome and can be tuned any way you want, but are very spendy.
