you took the guy's word that it was a head gasket and not something else like possibly bad piston rings in that cylinder?

have you done a compression and leak down test since getting it back together?  I'd personally start there.  go buy the tools from harbor freight for $30 each kit and then look on youtube for video how-to's for each scenario and report back.
