So after calling the local transmission shop and the Toyota dealer to clarify this transmission issue yesterday, I have come up with this. Many of these transmissions were used in the cars as well, but I am only observing the truck applications for this posting. There are still some things I am looking to clarify in regard to these transmissions, but this list should help everyone. There is one way to check, providing you have original equipment. The firewall VIN tag has color, trim, "A", and transmission codes on it. The 1983 2WD
Mojave I had had the W52 transmission code as the last 3 characters at the end of the list of codes.
I will try to add more information to this list in the future and will post it in the tech section.
1. No one knows of or has any knowledge of a L50 transmission.
2. The L52 5 speed transmission was used in the trucks 81-83.
3. The L48 4 speed transmission was used in the 81-83 trucks. (still waiting for definitive proof)
4. The W52 5 speed transmission was a RWD transmission used in the 2WD trucks late 81-83. Most likely 82-83 model year only since the input shaft for this truck is listed only in 82-83.
5. The L42 4 speed transmission was a RWD transmission used in the 74-80 trucks. This transmission was used for the 2.2 liter engines.
6. The L43 4 speed transmission was used in the 79-80 trucks. This transmission was used with the 2.4 liter engine.
7. The W50 5 speed transmission was a transmission used in the trucks from 75-78
