That's not much worse than the bs car manufacturers are telling people now about the best way to warm up your car is to start it and take off right away
Yea, tolerances are much tighter than back then, but it's still wise to let it warm up a little before driving, unless you like buying expensive engines

I go out and start my truck about 15 min before I go to work. Even with that, it still takes about 5 min of light driving (taking it easy, 35 and 45 mph) to get the truck up to operating temp. Thats with the same engine my neighbor has (for now)
I cringe at the thought of doing that to any of my vehicles.
