jeeps use unit bearings, they can come apart if they are not held together with the stub shaft. you can remove the inner shaft and leave the outer to drive with a broken shaft, you will need to stuff the housing with something to keep the gear oil in.

I have ruined a unit bearing by having an axle nut come loose, was the cause of some crazy death wobble that was difficult to track down.
