It's a mechanical cam, some noise is normal. I always thought they were too noisy setting them to spec and set mine @ .007 and .011. with a cold engine.

I rechecked when hot to make sure I still had clearance. No problems on my trucks since. One had 450K and the other has 404K. Still has slight noise but way less noticeable.

.001-.002 isn't going to kill you as long as it still has some clearance when hot. Everybody has a different "feel" when they set valves anyway. Use a go-no go type feeler gauge for consistency if it makes you more comfortable.

Some may disagree with me on this but the milage I get out of my engines tells me it's not a problem. I haven't had any abnormal cam or rocker wear, or any burnt valves.
