I have done it like that in past and it worked fine. 
I would still recommend measuring the pre-load to be on the safe side

I was definately planning to check the pre-load, which is pretty easy using a fishing scale. But centering the knuckle to the axle requires a
"special" (translation: EXPENSIVE!) tool that I don't have and would rather not buy.
