Maybe I'm a bit confused. I'm assuming 'cause of your sig it's an 85 4Runner.

did you just buy this rig, and figured out it wouldn't shift into 4lo, or is this a new development?

What makes you think you have to cut the shifter forks? Are they binding on something? could be they're just rusty and stuck. I'd pull it apart before I start planning on cutting anything. Try messing with it while it's on the ground, and see if you can figure out why it won't shift. Could just be the wrong shifter as well.

sounds like you may have the R150 tranny. I'm not a tranny expert, but I do know the shifter position is different, and the floor board needs to be cut in order to make it work. Not sure if there are other trannies that would bolt up the same way. Someone who knows more about it may be able to give a better answer. You could also look at some of the pics on Marlins site [link] http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmission/rebuilt-complete[/link] and see if you can figure it out.
* Regardless of what happens, someone will find a way to take it too seriously.
