ive got a 5 spd getrag, i haul my 85 excab to moab a couple times a yr, not supposed to take hills in overdrive, but i do. its got 274,000 miles and still running strong. the 2nd gen 94-98 have the nv4500, great tranny, but dodge still recomends not to tow uphill in overdrive. my buddy has a 94 3/4 ton, and he hauls a 32 ft goosneck with a 11 ft truckbed camper and his 87 excab on it alot too.
