As for the plans with the 1980 P/U, there are actually two sets of plans--mine and my wife's--and they differ to some extent
! Right now, it is stock with the exception of the Smittybilt bumpers.
For starters, we will be immediately replacing the L43, which seems pretty rough, with an L52 HD transmission that I bought used off of craigslist. According to the previous owner, Marlin rebuilt for the tranny for him in or around 2002, but soon after he installed it (approx. 6,000 mi), his 22r blew up, and his subsequent V8 swap wouldn’t allow reuse of the L Series tranny.
Anyway, I’ve got my fingers crossed that the transmission is everything he said it was. I didn't pay too much for it so it wouldn’t be a problem if I ended up just using it for Core, but of course that's not the idea.
I'd like to install the L52 with a single 4.7 case, get some sliders, tube bumpers, and hopefully lockers, and then attempt to wheel it a bit with 31s or something like that. Maybe way down the road, we will do bigger and better suspension mods.
HOWEVER. . .
My wife said the first priority is to get power steering, even though it’s just push-pull. I am looking for used parts to do this. So far I only have the push/pull power steering box.
