You are thinking wrong, a Detroit Locker is always locked until you corner and release the throttle. Then it unlocks, sometimes it doesn't even unlock in cornering downhill since it can't release the pressure. You are thinking of a limited slip which is easier on the drivetrain not harder since it "slips" and is why it isn't the best choice but will help out in a loose situation.
