Good pipe vs tubing... the real difference is how large it is.  3/4 inch pipe isn't going to get the job done very well, pure and simple.  1 1/2 inch... now that might actually hold without caving in the side of the vehicle(you'd survive both but less damage to the rig is better, right?)

Note - if you're worried about the cab crushing, even a simple roll bar behind the front seats is enough.    Not that I've seen it happen even without, barring a really high speed crash.(usually highway and not going over things)
