Correct, the interference part comes into play when you screw up on your mechanical timing AKA the timing chain. If you screw that up, you screw up your engine. Ignition timing has nothing to do with it, as stated above. Ignition timing is for IGNITION or in other words, when the spark is delivered to the cylinder.

see you time the crank and cam shaft at 0* and then you retard it 3-8* BTDC with the distributer.
