why?
My 4Runner with 4.88s and 35's performs adequately, but for daily driver use I would love to have 5.29s. The differentials are geared for the 33s I had on my 85 truck. As it is I run the timing advanced with premium fuel (considering going back to regular grade fuel) to squeeze all the available hp out of the 22RE. I can hardly use 5th gear on the highway.
To match "stock" gearing with 4.88s I believe it would be a 34 inch tires but you have to remember the larger tires weigh significantly more and often are wider yielding more drag, plus lifted truck are far less aerodynamic. 37's would simply be too much for me to use as a daily driver.
As for the 4.70 gears, while in Moab I found myself in low-low 1st and 2nd on almost every difficult spot. With the weight of the 4Runner and the traction on the rocks it wanted to bog down in higher gears.
