I wish I could remember exactly, or find the reference, but I remember reading where some mathmatician figured out you would have to drive a hybrid like 7-10 years before you recoup the extra cost of the hybrid with the gas savings.
I have read similar articles, and another point is that for a supposedly 'green' vehicle, a
lot more natural resources are required in the manufacturing process than for a comparable conventional vehicle.
