i've finally pulled the trigger and decided to replace my wheezy old 20R with 300,000 miles on it and the boat anchor L43 tranny in my '79 truck.  i picked up an '82 celica motor(dual row timing chain) and an '82 5 speed tranny.  seems like a pretty easy thing to do, but i have a few questions.

my tranny doesn't have any of the "clutch guts" that you need to make it work, except for the clutch fork.  i see a new clutch hub costs about $20 from toyota...does it come with the clips for the throwout bearing or will i have to buy them seperately or will they be in a clutch kit?  i'm planning on buying an '82 clutch set, since mine's worn out anyway   also, whats the p/n for the little shifter boot that goes right on top the tranny?  mines thrashed

We sell a used release bearing hub for $10.00. Two used clips for $3.00. The trans handle boot costs about $6.75. I am at home and and do not have the number in memory. The hub and clips do not come in a clutch kit.

what kind of bolts am i going to need in the lower part of the bellhousing?  i've heard that they need to be longer than the L43 bolts, but what size/length/grade do i need to get?

Only on the L45,50, and 52 are the lower two bellhousing bolts longer. The factory bolts are around $2.50 each. I keep new bolts in stock. The bolts are a 12x1.25 mm thread and must have a automotive 17mm head. Bolts from the corner hardware store will have an industrial 19mm head. This could cause a clearance issuse due to the larger size of the socket.

also, i've heard you have to make some mods to the shift tunnel to make the tranny fit.  what all does this entail?  is it just enlarging the hole, or a few whacks on the tunnel itself or what?  my tranny looks like it sits pretty low in there, and there seems like there'd be plenty of room...but who knows

The new trans is a top shifter, whereas your old trans was a side shifter from the righthand side. Only the hole for the trans handle needs to modified. Leave the t/case boot where it is.
