Nice write up. If you don't want to go LED you can get an improvement by just removing the green light condoms and run a brighter bulb. I used the Sylvania 194LL bulbs. According to the Sylvania website it has a higher than stock light output than most 168's or 194 and the LL's last longer.
I've purchased LED's like that online. I run them in my motorcycle to save a few watts off the charging system. Trust me I need it. They make them in most bulb types. Even 1156/1157's
