actually, that thing transfers exhaust from the exhaust side of the engine to the EGR valve, and coolant is in the head behind it. it is called the exhaust cooler or some 
. it's main purpose is to lower the temp of exhaust before it is redirected into the intake.
You're right. I couldn't remember if that tube carried exhaust or coolant when I rebuilt my motor.
