This FSM will show how to test the gauge itself. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-buchanan/93fsm/bodyelectrical/6combinat.pdf Page BE-36 right after the fuel gauge tests.

I believe to test the sender, you will need to check the resistance of the sensor with a ohm meter while the engine is cold. then warm the engine up and check the resistance again. it should be lower. If it is not, replace the sender.

It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.
