I just ran into the same problem, sort of. The tranny in my 85(w-56) is making noise in reverse, so I was going to swap it out with a tranny my friend had. It turns out its a G-58. I was looking all over for info but all I came up with that it has 26 splines vs 21/23. I didn't know about the shift rails. Maybe I'll just rebuild it.
