I'd say it definately depends on the vehicle. On my FJ40 with wontons and 42s, I ran no shocks for 6-8 months. Mainly because I had little free time to install them and the time I did have, I was wheeling. I drove it on the road about 50-55 mph, on the top end of Dusy, all over Bald both dry and in the snow. The only time I had any bouncing that would be gone with shocks was in the snow, bombing the snow covered service road that leads to the trail head. Everyone drives it fast so it gets a bit rough. Other than that it wheeled awesome. My traction bar kept the bounce down when climbing.
Now with the Rocks install, I fully intend to throw on my Bilsteins. Hopefully I don't get the itch right before putting them on and end up wheeling my time away with no shocks. :dunno:
