you cant really control the gears.

You don't have to like an auto jammer and I wont try and talk you into one but your statement of not being able to control the gears is not true.  You may be referring to a stock tranny where you have only minimum control but my good friend builds GM, Ford and Dodge automatics for a living.  With some of the right aftermarket parts you can make an auto do just about anything you want and I am not talking about a ton of money to make it happen either.  A full manual valve body is a great example of this.
