The air won't ram into the center piece because it matches the bores on the carb. I took mine and matched it both to the carb and intake manifold gaskets and ended up with very little in the middle but still some. Can't tell you what the benefit was because the engine blew up directly after that.
Edit: I take that back. I matched the manifold to the adapter, had it backward in my head. I do think I cleaned out any ridges in the adapter though.
