I think you would be dollars ahead with a well built 22r or 22RE you could get around 20mpg.

i actually think the 22r is a very capable engine... i love mine... and its easy to work on... ive replaced teh head, and timing chain, so really there isnt too much left other than the block and crank/pistons... very reliable, readily available and decent gas mileage
