very true, i just did the oil pan in the 85, easy as pie, just clean it up very well and use alittle bit of silicon on the pan side to fill in the little divit.... tighten it evenly and DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!!! just snug it up till it puffs out the side a little bit.... then you shouldnt have any worries!
I did the same way, some RTV on the pan side of the gasket. And I tightened it until the quark puffed out at the edge a little, but I had to go about another half turn to get it to fully seal. Could be my pan though, it was a bit funky on the flange.
