Don't rely on snopes as a knowledge/fact crutch because I've seen them be wrong before. From what I've seen they're reasonably reliable, but I've seen enough misinformation on snopes to know to take anything from them with a grain of salt.
I'd believe snopes before I believe the friend of a co-worker's aunts best friends son's co-workers daughter.
And I would way rather see LESS junk email going around, even if snopes is wrong about people being ambushed in parking lots by perfume wielding muggers.
And while any online info is due to have misinformation, I would put good money on most of the time them being RIGHT.
