It's actually called a "peri-rectal abscess" They can be a real pain in the ass (pun intended) to treat. Often if we catch them early enough IV antibiotics can do the trick, but unfortunatly, most do require I&D (incision and drainage). Because there is a direct communication with the peritoneal cavity, we often will take them to the operating room to ensure we get the whole thing out. Often times they are directly related to a diverticuli, which forms the abscess. Depending on the approach, there is either an outisde opening, or sometimes there is an internal opening. Typicaly, a few days in the hospital getting IV gorilla-cillin, then oral antibiotics and lots of pain meds. There is a small, but real risk that it will occur again.
