No, you can't use a rear axle and convert it. (at least that i've every heard of) You would have to use a front end turned around like gettinit said. Strength as a rear is questionable. Although longfields and hub flanges would be a huge improvement over earlier attempts. Not to mention that it wouldn't be street legal either. It would be a consideration on a light weight trail only buggy though.
