mine's skinny but tall so I mounted it all the way in the back. I'd have to say the only advantage to aluminum is that its lighter... I'd go with steel if weight wasn't an issue becuase it'll be much stronger and like you said.. much easier to weld too and customize in the future.

what dimensions are you looking for?  they make all different sizes for RCI fuel cells.
