Hey wa4x4 I know how ya feel it is real hard to determine what you want with the vast selection out there. It took a long time for me to get into Toyota's.
I didn't want to for the longest time because every body around has one.
But I am glad i did, the components are tough, not to under powered and so many modifications are available and the use of other things is so diverse, like for example have you ever seen a samurai with Chevy springs, how many samurai's have you seen holding up to V8 power, I am not saying it hasn't been done and it is not possible it may just take better innovation and different mods to build it to be what you want.
Just get something man, I wouldn't mind wheeling with you regardless what you drive.
