What does your truck have 4 cylinder? Like you are hearing gears are a factor, I ran my white truck with 4 cyl
88 5 speed  and had great success never broke any thing after years of trail abuse. It did have a locker in the back. The only advice I would have is try to get a (6 inch rate) with your customers  for lots to keep the beating to a minimum. Yes you may need 4L more than you would like.
