A lot of the 2wds came with manual brakes and manual steering. Which would suck in a trail truck. I would just find a cheap IFS truck and forget the 2wd to 4wd in my opinion. 4x4 Ifs toyotas in decent shape are not hard to come by in the less than 1000$ price range (at least in my area because the bodies are rotten). I think starting with a 4wd is gonna make life a lot easier for you in the long run. You are also gonna get a smaller rear axle being the truck is 2wd. That is only my opinion though.
