It can be done, just not as easily as your typical American axle with a cast center section and pressed/welded/plugged in tubes. Like I said, ZUK did something similar except he took a Land Cruiser 9.5 center section and welded it into Tacoma Tubes. See this YotaTech thread. It all starts at post # 326 near the end.
