Sounds like tearing into an old house.  You don't know what you are getting into until you start taking it apart and once you take it apart you are committed to doing whatever you have to before it can be fixed.

Except of course these have to stay afloat.

That's a fairly good analogy.  We can get pretty close on what the overall house renovation cost will be, but they are asking us to essentially make a list of each repair that will be required based on the last houses that we renovated.

It actually get's better today as the person that just "got it" yesterday is now trying to explain her newfound thimble of knowledge with the contract boss (i.e. her bosses boss, I think).  Now she's really walking in my shoes!
