I have found that once it is charging, it will charge even at idle. But it takes awhile to get it there. Revving it up to 1800 a few times isn't enough, it has to be driven a bit before it does its thing. That being said, I am happy enough with it that I will probably buy another one for my new 1985 project if it ever goes out.
