'79s did use an in-tank electric pump however I am not familiar with their internal baffling. Because I was doing an EFI swap anyway, I chose to go with (what I believe is) the largest Hilux tank, namely a 3rd gen XtraCab 6-cyl tank. I believe mine came from a 1992. The most I've filled up was around 19.6 gallons, so I assume it holds ~20 gal.
Because I installed a long bed tank into my short bed frame, I did have to move the rear mounting bar back on my frame about a foot or so. If interested I've got a few pics and info posted at

For a fuel pump, I went with a 3.4-liter Tacoma fuel pump. The newer pumps are shorter and more efficient so you'll need a slightly longer hose between the bracket and the pump. I like the 3.4-liter pumps so much I installed the same into my '87 Supercharged MR2's stock gas tank. It's probably the same as the 2.7-liter, but saying I have a "6cyl pump" just sounds better
