that's what i was thinking as well.  i just rebuilt the shifter socket stuff on my wifes 83 it's a snap.  and the parts are way cheap from the dealer.  

i had it done in about 20 minutes.  some of that was running back and forth to the shop for different tools.  ended up that a pair of those spreader pliers,(don't know the real name), worked perfect to turn the steel cap to release the shifter.  i was amazed how easy it all was.
