though i do agree that duals are better in this application, but i'll play devil's advocate and ask has anybody ever thought of just using a higher gear in their tranny with a single case?  it's not like you're locked in 1st gear when in low range

With 33 inch tires, 4.88 gears, and 4.7 low range my truck runs about 19 mph at 4,000 rpm.  Most of the time it is OK, but the higher transmission gears are not always designed for the same amount of torque as the lower gears, espectially overdirve (5th).  Having a single 4.7 is way better than stock, but having more options would be better.
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

Moab Tested & Rubicon Approved
