FWIW My '88 4Runner with the same engine as yours blew it's AFM a couple of years ago. Toyota wanted north of $800 for a new one. I got a re-manufactured AFM with a 1 year guarantee from Advanced Auto for $125 and core exchange. That was 2-3 years ago and it has worked perfectly.
