new used trailer
« on: Nov 17, 2015, 09:16:33 AM »
Some of you may have seen the pictures of my last trailer (36' low deck all steel kaufman) sold it at the end of last year because we hardly did any wheeling in trucks anymore, it weighed almost 8500 lb dry, and was too low to take off the road anywhere. A friend has a 25' deck over and his father has a 40' deck over that I use both of quite frequently. I figured I would be good to let go of the 36. Boy was I wrong, I have needed a 14k rated trailer about 25 times this year for side work when the other 25' deck over was in use and missed out on the tractor work that could have been done to help buy upgrades for the rigs. I got on the hunt a few weeks ago and after looking at a few used I decided I would bite the bullet and some how convince myself that 6 grand wasn't that much money when it would pay for itself in less than a year with the tractor work it would allow. I called about 30-40 dealers and manufacturers, first question was do you have any used, then the price on a new one built the way I wanted it. The last call made was to lone wolf trailers just south of Huntsville. The man said he had a trade in they just got, put a new deck on it, checked the brakes and bearings and she was ready to go for a fraction of the new cost. He sent these pictures and told me $2800 cash. My friend/brother ben is a mechanical engineer in huntsville I gave him the layout of it and materials used to construct it, he did a structural analysis of it and says she is well rated for the abuse I'll give it. I plan to head out Friday after work and stay with Ben that night, get to lone wolf at 7 when they open, then head home.

how long is the deck on the one you are looking at 25'? either way 2800 is a screaming deal for any 14k gooseneck. i paid that for my 20' 10k tilit bumper pull.

Yeah its only a 20+5. I wanted a 27+5 but 6500 wasn't exactly something I could justify. The 25 will haul the tractor. Only reason I wanted another 32 was so I could haul 2 toyotas, but I'd rather pay half the money for this little one and let it pay for itself.

still way cheaper than trailers here.

that 20+5 would probably cost 6500 used here in california. but you also have to have a CDL to tow over 10k here in CA. it is dumb.

Most used here are between 4500-5500. New 6500. Alabama does t require cdl under 20000lb rated trailer. That's why I want to stay at 14. I don't want a cdl, work would stick me in a truck or roll back too often lol

Washington also!!  They will nail anybody driving the Ford F450's with even a small garden trailer.  The truck has a GCWR of 26,000 lbs.  And that requires a class B CDL.  You can drive the truck, but as soon as there is a trailer involved, the cops will pull you over.

Wow, that's some serious stuff. I suppose it's all for safety though. I know I see some complete fools on the road from time to time. I've seen a 50+' mobile home being pulled by a early 90s tbi z71 at 55 mph down a road where the speed limit was 45...
I've hauled some heavy junk, but always with safety in mind.

Only if the use is commercial, otherwise a Class C will allow you to tow up to 21,000lbs vehicle+trailer, or up to 26k lbs when used for agricultural purposes.

Given how little most people who own a trailer actually tow it, limiting them to a certain weight w/a class C license isn't unreasonable, especially given how lazy most people appear to be when it comes to maintaining their trailers.

not true. the chart you posted cut off the title of the two columns. the left column says "You May Drive...", the right column says "You May Tow..."

even though you can drive a 2 axle vehicle with a GVWR of 26,000 or less, the trailer weights have to meet what is outlined in the right column. so even if your truck actually weighs 8
K with a 26k GVWR you can still only tow 10k unless it is a 5th wheel travel trailer up to but not exceeding 15k but this requires an endorsement. there is a non commercial class A that will let you tow a heavier travel trailer but that only applies to travel trailers as defined by the CA DMV.  flatbeds, dump trailers etc do not qualify as a travel trailer.

this is all not for compensation of course. i fought this battle once.  note this also applies to trailers rated over 10k even if unloaded because the law states you can only tow a single vehicle with a 10k GVWR. even if the curb weight is 2k they can still ticket you for towing a 14k GVWR trailer.

stupid.

You are correct, I didn't research any further than the DMV page that I posted, which is misleading since it doesn't state any need for an endorsement other than for towing 2 trailers(Class A).  The endorsement is rather pointless given what they will allow you to drive and tow combined without taking any tests at all.

Definitely a different ball field over there. I drag the 40' 20k rated deck over all the time slap a not for hire magnetic Sign on the neck and roll out. Last time I used it was to get these barge lids home for the lean to I have yet to build.

Not sure when it became an issue, never had any problems in the 80's-90's, then again that was before having a big ass diesel rig in your suburb driveway became a status symbol.

Yeah in the last 10 years I see more kids with 7.3 and power stroked on 40s riding around. Took a good tow rig and put it too high to pull a trailer...

Trip went well, played with loading to see how it would work. I'll never take the dd and the whorerunner to the same place so not too bummed that they wouldnt fit, definitely got room for my buddies sammie or my other friends 3rd gen pickup would fit.
