1st gen taco ls swap?
« on: Oct 16, 2015, 09:10:42 AM »
I have a 98 taco with 350k on it. The 3rz has a cracked head and low compression. I'm really thinking of swapping a 5.3 using the w59 and keeping it ifs it's just a street truck but would like it to have the torque and power of the ls. I'm not wasting the time for a 3.4 swap. Wife's 4runner is a 3.4 it does its job but I want more for less. I've seen a few swaps on other forums but nothing very useful. Also I'm not doing a 1uz or 2uz because of the shear cost of it. 5.3 can be had complete with harness for just about free.

Has anyone here done this swap?

Any thoughts or concerns from anyone?

I would be careful on that Trans choice. And yes that swap can be 3,500 or 10k. I have a 5.3 sitting g on the side right now complete with harness that I ripped out of a 03' silv. Got it for 350 lol. I would like to see one in a taco. If it is going to be a dd or more of a street rig I would go with NV style trans 3500, 4500. Just my  :twocents:

Just a dd. It will never go wheelin. I hate an nv. I'm on number 7 in my dodge right now. I have to be patient and wait for the 5.3 to show up. You don't think a w59 would hold a little 300hp engine?

I would not rely on that trans for a 300hp engine....plus the torque difference. I have only ran across problems on the 5th gear in the 4500. Plus your dodge has what 500-650ft lbs torque? Just a suggestion. They are synchronized and shift smooth as hell. Or just throw a 4l60 in it. I would personally prefer an auto on a dd.

Auto has 2 places, fire arms and drag strip. I reckon I need to start digging more into othet trans possibilities. Maybe an ax15? I hate an nv.

I guess it's all personal preference. I have installed a few nv4500 in swapped sbc rigs. One is my dads 75 fj. And it was one of the best things I did for his rig, but yeah the ax is a good trans. I was just thinking of direct bolt on. And GM offered a NV on the ls.

Maybe they hold up behind the lower torque applications. I ran a nv3500 in a chevrolet I built when I was in high school and it worked well. As for an nv behind an 800 ftlb diesel, they just plain suck. Lol

Hello y'all my name's Matt and this is my first post on this Forum!... :shades:

First of I know this is an old thread, second did the OP ever complete the swap? I have a 2000 Tacoma 3.4l with close to 300k on it, threw a rod on me Friday. I happen to have a totaled 2006 Chevy Silverado with a good and strong 6.0l in it. Seriously debating swapping it and the trans into my Taco... I bought the truck wrecked just so I could swap the engine/trans into something... (was thinking my 1980 Chevy Stepside)... I have swapped an exact same year 6.0/4L80E into my 1987 Blazer and it is freakin' awesome. I had Howell Fuel Injection do the ECM programming and harness for me last time and I'd likely have them do it again for me... So if anybody has done this already I'd love to hear about it or even better see some pics.

My Tacoma is a 2000 3.4L 5speed sr5 4x4 with 6" lift (still IFS) and 35's. Have a brand new set of Yukon 5.29s sitting in my shop for it....

No I actually traded that truck for my 06 taco. However... I have since seen 2 tacos in person but they did like you want to do and left the v8 an auto. I wanted to retain the 5 speed.

I gotcha, auto v standard doesn't really matter to me honestly. You don't happen to have pics do you?

No sir. I'm sorry I didn't examine them that close. You pretty much have it built in your head already it seems. Just build you some mounts and drop it in. Get a fuel line built and wire her for sound. Leaving the 4l80 behind it wI'll certainly make it a more simple swap.
