22re rebuild Q's
« on: Jun 22, 2010, 01:37:26 PM »
Been able to save money all year to finally rebuild my 1994 22re.So far ive accumulated a brand new head (bare), O/S valves, springs, oil/water pump and timing chain kit with metal guides from engbldr in portland. I am trying to get a decent amount of power from my rebuild 150-175 hopefully. I know LC has a great reputation and have the following cart on the maybe list:

1032070   Thermostat - 20R/22R/RE (180 Degree)      $8.95 $8.95  0
1060005   22RE (89-95) Intake Performance Package      $824.95 $824.95  0
1022021   Camshaft - 22RE/RET EFI Pro Cam      $169.95 $169.95  0
1093000   Fan - 22R/RE & 3VZ 1984-1995 Black Magic Fan      $289.95 $289.95  0
Will the lower degree thermostat help? The intake performance package seems like a good deal and will make a big difference, i could be entirely wrong.  I do know their cams are sopposed to be some of the best, as i buying LC's when i already have the low end engbldr cam. The electric fan should be a great clean setup. not the cheapest, but i am hoping the results are worth the cost. I feel like going 4 over on the piston size is a good route, any suggestion on a good, light, reliable piston? also with 210, xxxx miles should i think about replacing the crank and/or rods? the motor has no current issues besides being very tired and in need of power for the SAS and new tires. Will a new distributor be a key part to replace as well? also whats the best headgasket to use for longevity and reliability in a more powerful motor? I want this done right and reliable as it will be my daily driver  any suggestions help. Thanks!

you need to take the bare block to your local machine shop and let them bore it to clean all scratches out, then and only then should a piston size be determined.  DONT BUY KEITH BLACK PISTONS

get stock style pistons, and dont go over .040

have your crank checked by the machine shop and get your rods checked and possibly resized (sometimes the rods become egg shaped)

I would pass on this--> 060005   22RE (89-95) Intake Performance Package      $824.95 $824.95

and get this --> http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGear/ProductDetails.aspx?PartUniqueID=C3F45C24-6342-4238-88D8-1D4CCE820050

it comes with the cam, throttle body and the headers.

It costs a lot of money to get descent power out of a 22re but it can be done. I would just do the little stuff like a header, maybe an msd box but beyond that I would just run your stock motor unless you want to build a hybrid and put your fuel injection stuff on that.

I looked at that kit as well, but i already have a header and full K&N intake. i left that out for some reason. Do you run that cam? if so how did your motor turn out with power and reliability?

An MSD ignition? i havent looked into that yet.

I do run a cam but I didn't buy LC's kit. It runs pretty well. With a 22r your not going to get to much power with out spending a lot of coin.

My hybrid set up is tits. I wouldn't buy LC's set up for that tho, you will spend a lot of money, not that they don't sell good stuff. I'm running their adjustable timing gear. I went to pick and pull and got an early 20r head and took it along with a pre 85 22r lower end. I had the head rebuilt, 22r valves installed and I had the lower end rebuilt. I put the head on the motor myself and of course I used a factory toyota head gasket. The engines are not hard to assemble, I just got a good deal and I needed it done in a hurry. I hope this helps.
