HELP WITH SMOG INFO!
« on: Apr 23, 2003, 03:22:01 PM »
:help:I took a 22R engine from an 83 Toy 4x4 and I want to put it in my 85.  I noticed the deck height and the head are different.  If I adapt the 85 smog equipment to this engine am I going to be able to smog it or will they say no because its an engine from an older truck.  Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated, what if I just get a head from an 85 will that fix my dillema?

If your truck is a Carbureted 85' then you can adapt the equipment (if feasible) and they wont know any difference.

In my MR2, I have an engine from an early 4A style engine, specifically from 1983.5-1986.5 whereas my car is a 1987. How are they different you ask? Glad you asked, the engine block has ribs on the side that are a dead give away. 3 Rib blocks are the early style and in 1987 they switched to stronger 7 rib blocks that also had stronger internals and wider main & rod bearings.

So TECHNICALLY, I had a smog-illegal engine. Right, its an engine thats earlier than the car. Big no-no. But of course I wasnt worried. Do I think the smog tech knows :pokinit: about that engine? Helllssss-no.

Just smog it. Then rip the crap gas & power robbing smog equipment off. That's what I did.

BigMike is right smog goes by the year of the vehicle. As long as the truck was not EFI Then your not in to bad of shape. You have to have all the visual stuff for a 85' on the motor. As long as the visual is there and it passes out the pipe they will have no idea what year the motor is.  But your carb is different i beleive so you may need to put a 85' carb on so the smogg equipment will hook up

I have all the smog equipment on from the 85,  there were a few pieces from the 85 carb that I had to put on the 83 carb but for the most part they are the same.  The valve cover and shape of the head are totally different on the two engines that is why  I am concerned about them noticing.  Oh and the fact that I have to go to a test only facility.  Anyone know a leanient test only facility in fresno or one that will guarantee a passage for a small amount of cash hahaha. ...........

most smog techs don't know or care.  as long as the smog equipment is on.

i just smoged my wife's 83 that i built for her and i put in a 22r with a 20r head.
well i had to get an adapter for the 22r carb to the 20r intake manifold to get the 22r carb on and the thermally controlled vacuum valves are in all different places.  Actually i ran out of pipe threaded water holes so i ran it without the temp gauge and just tucked the wire under the intake.

took it in and all the guy looked at was the smog equipment.  all of the stock carb stuff was hooked up so he ran it on the machine and "vuala."  it passed.  took it home and hooked up the temp gauge.

i would guess that as long as you don't bring it to a Toyota dealer or a Toyota specializing shop to smog it they won't know the better.

go for it!

In Fresno? What the hell are you doing in Fresno?

Yes, I know of a great Test Only Shop. Give Sherman a call at Witness Smog. I used a $10-off card that someone gave me. I know where to get another discount card-

Sherman runs a little Smog Shop Blackstone and McKinley. Specifically, East side of Blackstone and North of McKinley. Across the street from the City College Ratcliff Stadium. 'Witness Smog'. Has a yellow sign. He is self employed and has no other employees working for him, so he has a very small overhead cost to cover. So he's either making a killing or not charging alot of money. Either way he's is good shape.

Look up his # in the phn book as I dont have it here.
He passed my car on two trys. Only charged like $20 to retest it. Very reasonable and a nice guy. He even overlooked my aftermarket Coil and Igniter, and also didnt care that my car was about 3 degrees retarded on the timing. How do ya like that!

You better watch out about those test only stations cause they are not allowed to touch your vehicle, so if its just idleing high most will not adjust it for you.  The shop BigMike is talking about sounds like a good shop to go to. You want someone to make adjustments for you like on you carb and timming.
