IMO K&N air filters do allow your engine to breath better but, they also allow more bad stuff into the engine(dirt+grime)
That's how I roll

That's not just opionion that is fact.  They allow a lot more dirt in.  I have a K&N cone filter on my yota.  Last 4x trip after following my friends down a very dusty road my intake tube was coated with dust.  I pretty thick layer.  That means a ton of dirt went into my motor.  And the dust wasn't there before the trip because I just installed it.

The filters do flow better but the main reason K&N kits make more power is the redesigned intake piping.  Not just the filter.

If you want a compromise use an oiled foam filter.  Thats what I have gone to.
